How Gardening Saved Me
Discovering my passion for gardening was a pleasant surprise that happened three years ago. It was March 2020, my vacation to San Diego was just cancelled, the world was panicking (you know, the beginning of the big P), we were all confused. I lived in a condo at the time, there was a 10x10 plot in front of our home that was shared with all our neighbors. There was nothing really happening other than the weeds taking over, so I went for it.
Little did I know that three years later, I would find myself arranging bouquets from flowers I grew from seed, expanding my vegetable garden, and learning the art of mindfulness while surrounding to circumstances outside of my control. Gardening has become an integral part of my self-preservation routine, and I am convinced it can have the same transformative effect on others.
BENEFITS OF GARDENING FOR YOUR HEALTH
Gardening goes beyond adding vibrant colors to your surroundings. It has the power to enhance your overall well-being, benefiting both your mind and body. Engaging in gardening encourages physical activity and provides an opportunity to spend time outdoors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), just 2.5 hours of gardening per week can reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, and strokes. Additionally, studies have shown that gardening can alleviate chronic pain, enhance the immune system, and facilitate easier recovery from infections.
MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARDENING
Gardens provide a purpose, offering a sanctuary for physical activity and mindfulness. Gardening has helped me realize the significance of connecting with nature and enjoying fresh air for both my physical and mental well-being.
Reduce symptoms of depression
Alleviate anxiety and stress
Enhance mood
Boost self-esteem
Improve attention span
MY TIPS FOR BEGINNER GARDENERS
My top advice for beginners is to grow what you enjoy eating! There's no need to grow vegetables or herbs that you don't particularly like. Start with a few of your favorites, keeping it simple and enjoyable. Don't stress yourself trying to cultivate produce that you won't even relish consuming. Begin with five or six crops that you love, gather as much knowledge as possible on how to grow them successfully, and make notes along the way. By the following season, you'll have valuable info to work with, gained experience, and a better understanding of how much gardening you can manage.
Don't have a large space for a garden? No problem! Container gardening is an excellent option for beginners. It is easier to maintain and requires minimal space. Container gardening is perfect for growing vegetables, fruits, or flowers for the first time.
