How to Host a Perfect Summer Soiree
I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite hosting tips for throwing a memorable summer gathering. Whether you’re hosting for the first time or you’re a seasoned pro, these tips will help you create an unforgettable event.
Setting the Scene
1. Embrace the Outdoors
I love to host outside! When we bought our house last year (first-time homeowners), we specifically kept in mind that we wanted to have a beautiful outdoor hosting space. We recently built our own pergola (linked), and it has added the perfect texture, shade, and aesthetic to our backyard. We love to host and gather under it. Set up your gathering in a shaded area under a pergola or canopy to keep guests cool. Create a comfortable atmosphere with outdoor rugs, cushions, and plenty of seating.
2. Bright and Airy Decor
My favorite tablescape always includes fresh flowers, neutrals, and linens, with pops of colors and lots of texture. If the flowers can be from your personal garden—that's fantastic; if they're store-bought, that's great too. Incorporate bright colors and light fabrics into your decor to reflect the vibrant energy of summer. Think shades of blue, green, yellow, and coral. Use lightweight tablecloths, napkins, and pillows to create a breezy and inviting setting. Add some fresh flowers from your garden for a natural touch.
Planning the Menu
3. Light and Refreshing Dishes
When planning your menu, focus on light and refreshing dishes that are perfect for hot weather. I always try to use produce in season—fresh vegetables and fruits. Think salads, grilled vegetables, and fresh fruit platters. Consider serving chilled soups, like gazpacho, and cold pasta salads to keep things cool and delicious. It's so hot here in NJ in the summer, and the humidity is awful, so keeping things light and airy is my go-to.
4. Drink Station
Set up a drink station with a variety of cool beverages to keep your guests hydrated. Offer options like infused water, iced tea, lemonade, and summer cocktails. Include fun garnishes like mint leaves, citrus slices, and berries. A self-serve drink station allows guests to customize their drinks and stay refreshed.
Preparing Your Space
5. Kitchen Prep
An organized indoor kitchen is key to a smooth hosting experience. I prep everything the week of, starting with pulling out every item I think I may need to host, from serving dishes, plates, and cups, to cutlery, including vases and candlesticks or whatever else I may need for the tablescape and decor. I also create a menu the week of, and a grocery list for everything I need. Labeling my serving dishes for each recipe I'm going to make also helps to ensure I have everything I need. I try to grocery shop the day before, and prep all meals or dishes that I can beforehand.
6. Comfortable Seating Arrangements
Make sure there’s enough seating for everyone to relax and enjoy. Depending on what you're serving, you can either host on outdoor couches/seating or at an outdoor table. Our patio is set up with both, so if we're serving full meals and dishes, we set up our outdoor dining table. For small bites or tapas and snacks, I set up seating and clean the patio, make sure the cushions are clean and the area is free of debris and bugs. Arrange seating in small clusters to encourage conversation and create a cozy atmosphere.
Engaging Your Guests
7. All About the Details
Personal touches can make a big difference. Make your guests feel comfortable by serving a dish or drink you know they love. I love to serve things that my guests have mentioned they enjoy. Creating handwritten name cards or drawing a menu adds a personal and thoughtful touch that your guests will appreciate.
8. Music and Ambiance
Consider the energy you want to cultivate for your gathering. Yes, the ambiance, menu, and tablescape all make a difference, but music especially sets the tone. Depending on the reason for gathering, your playlist may vary. I can always listen to Taylor Swift, although I always love to have a mix of pop, indie, and some throwbacks—easy to listen to and vibe to. Create a playlist that complements the mood of your event and enhances the overall experience for your guests.
Finally, remember to relax and enjoy the event. I am usually an anxious mess for days leading up to hosting; it's a practice that I've really worked on to be present and not stress out about how everything will work out and trying to control things that I can't (of course, my therapist brain knows that—but I'm human too). Hosting is all about connecting with people, and that's what it’s all about for me—having quality time with my loved ones.
